Google Local Services Ads vs. Search Ads: Which Should You Use?

Google offers two very different ways to show up at the top of search results. Understanding the difference between pay per lead and pay per click is the first step to a better budget.

Most contractors know they need to be on Google.

But Google does not make it easy to choose how to get there.

Local Services Ads and standard Search Ads both put your name at the top.

They look different and they bill different.

Choosing the wrong one for your goals can waste thousands of dollars before you notice.

02

Local Services Ads: Pay Per Lead

Local Services Ads or LSAs are the boxes with the Google Guaranteed badge.

They sit at the very top of the page.

You do not pay when someone clicks your profile.

You only pay when someone calls or messages you through the ad.

This is a low risk way to start.

If the phone does not ring, you do not pay.

The downside is that Google controls almost everything.

You cannot write your own ad copy or choose specific keywords.

03

Search Ads: Pay Per Click

Search Ads are the traditional text ads below the LSAs.

You pay every time someone clicks on your ad and visits your website.

This gives you total control.

You choose exactly which words trigger your ad.

You write the message that homeowners see.

You decide which page on your website they land on.

But if the website does not convert, you still pay for the click.

04

Trust and Verification

LSAs require a background check and license verification.

The Google Guaranteed badge builds immediate trust.

Search Ads do not require this level of vetting.

In Search Ads, you have to build trust through your landing page and your reviews.

Both can work, but they solve different problems for the homeowner.

05

The Volume and Control Trade-off

LSAs are often cheaper per lead, but the volume can be unpredictable.

You might get ten calls one week and two the next.

Search Ads allow you to scale.

If you need more jobs, you can usually buy more clicks by increasing your budget.

You can also target specific high value services that LSAs might lump together.

06

Which One Wins?

For most established companies, the answer is both.

LSAs capture the easy wins and build credibility.

Search Ads provide the volume and targeting needed to keep crews busy year round.

Start with LSAs to get the badge and then add Search Ads to own more of the page.

Do not choose between them if you can afford to dominate the search results with both.
